A busy one. I started heading to St Paul’s around midday, with the intention of taking some test shots for my project. I spent about an hour there, I think. I was tempted to get a ticket to go inside, but – at £27 each I decided outside was better…
Eventually I dragged myself away from the cathedral, and walked toward, and over, Blackfriars Bridge – heading for the Southbank. I paused on the bridge itself to get some pictures of Southbank Beach, below Oxo Tower, whilst the tide was low – to get another few shots for the project, as ‘Southbank Beach’ was another of the given locations. Although it wasn’t the memory I shared for the questionnaire, I was actually there on the night recollected – New Year’s Eve 2018 into New Year’s Day 2019.
I’ve pondered a few times – considering whether to act exactly on memories that aren’t mine, but that I was there for. I’ve had a few answers to the questionnaire like this, because most of the responses so far have been from people I know. Ultimately on this one I decided to follow the memory down to the waterside, and got some photos and videos from on the beach, before walking over to Southbank Skate Park for another memory shared. I got some really cool shots (in my opinion) of the skaters in action.
Lastly, I went into the BFI Archives, mostly to browse for its formatting… if I’m honest I wasn’t blown away by the organisation/ layout of the computer-based archive, though it was simple enough to use!
I’m still wanting to involve the use of film somehow, particularly in my final exhibition display – but perhaps this is mostly because I want to create something that people feel immersed in, and that they can talk about whilst watching. Saying things like “I’ve been there”; recounting their own anecdotes, and experiences.
